RGC expansion in Italy

September 6, 2011

The Rio Grappling Club welcomes the new affiliated schools in the Tuscan region, Italy. Now you can also train with us in Viareggio and Pistoia. RGC Viareggio is captained by Alberto Remedi under supervision of Bernardo Serrini (RGC Livorno and Italian Head Coach), while RGC Pistoia is leaded by Alberto Tesi, under the eyes of Matteo Calamandrei (RGC Firenze).

We also congratulate the coaches Bernardo Serrini, Matteo Calamandrei, Gianluca Boni and Matteo Menna that were granted black belts in Grappling by the Italian federation FIGMA, responsible for all Grappling tournaments in Italy.

Back from the Summer Camp!

September 4, 2011

In the hottest month in Europe, most people are just chilling out and enjoying the weather, but for us grapplers the idea is to chill out, enjoy the weather and also train! That is why on each year we get more people joining our BJJ/Grappling Camp. From 12 people in 2009 to 32 on our third edition, the group is growing steadily and the fact that most participants returned shows that we are going in the right path.

Camp started on Saturday, 13th of August and we ran technical, drills and sparring sessions for 8 days, consuming lots of Italian food to keep our engines running. The atmosphere in the Due Laghi Hotel is perfect as the place is near beaches and cities but isolated enough to keep us focused on training and getting to know better our group. Having the meals together is great too as we feel as an extended family. The weeklong is great as we develop our games, measure against each other in a relaxed environment and become more integrated into the Rio Grappling Club. So it is about the training but not only that, is also about forging friendships. Hard to explain in words but feel invited to come and join us next year to experience a week not to be forgotten.

The training schedule has improved and now we have 3 classes on most days. The morning session is about specific and general sparring, the afternoon class focus on drills and at night we rehearse techniques. This year the focus was on guard, and we expect to see the progress in our students and their students (the fact that many RGC instructors take part helps to spread the knowledge beyond them).

We had participants from Italy (RGC Livorno, RGC Firenze, RGC Sestri Levante, RGC Bologna, RGC Ferrara, RGC Cesena, RGC Molfetta and the Brothers Leteri from Verona), Poland (RGC Wroclaw and Copacabana), Serbia (our newest member, Nenad Latincic, now responsible for the RGC in Belgrade), Czech Republic, Spain, Sweden and Brasil.

On the last day we had the belt ceremony, promoting Matteo Menna to the brown belt, Matteo Tugnoli, Valerio Mori Ubaldini and Fabio Battelli to the purple, Sara Giachetti to blue belt and giving Mariusz Koziej his first stripe on the black belt as well as a few stripes to many participants who had to go through the belt whipping.

Special thanks to all RGC instructors and students, our guests, and to Mariusz Koziej who did a brilliant job taking the drills to another level. I feel that our mission was well accomplished and we are planning the next one, possibly in the same place and probably extending it to 10 days. Many participants already posted their photos on Facebook, but I will select a few to publish on our blog this week. Stay tuned!

Seminar in Dubai

July 24, 2011

Dubai is one of those cosmopolitan places, with so many expats from all over the globe, and one can meet people from all continents. Such a diverse environment is great as it allows people to face diversity and learn a lot about other cultures. It is a great experience to teach here. After 3 weeks teaching regular classes at Emirates Jiu Jitsu Center, yesterday was the big day, when we had our scheduled seminar. I was not sure about the turnout, but we had a full house at last.

Diversity is the word, we had on the mats people from Brasil, USA, England, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Philippines, Palestine, UAE, Pakistan, Poland and Kazakhstan. I am glad I can unite people from so different backgrounds around BJJ. Seminar was the traditional Submission Escapes that I previously taught in Sweden, Italy, Poland, South Africa and Croatia, and guys were happy to improve their defence.

Thanks to everyone that attended.

New belts in Joburg!

June 19, 2011

Congratulations to my students Jurgen Putter, Martin Booysen and Sergio Freitas that received today their brown belts and to Francois Groenenwald and Shaun Blumberg that are now proud purples. Seminar in Northcliff today was amazing, we had a good turnout considering the long weekend and Father’s day. Looking forward to two more weeks teaching in Johannesburg and Pretoria, next I will travel to Dubai to teach at the Emirates Jiu Jitsu Center for the whole month of July. Keep tuned, folks!

RIP Grand Master Helio Gracie

January 29, 2009

Today the whole martial arts community is sad. Grand Master Helio Gracie passed away in Itaipava. I confess that I have no idea what to say about it, just that he will be missed by all of us that had the opportunity to meet him personally, and also by many that realise how much he contributed to the evolution and growth of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

I saw him a few times but it was last year that I finally had the chance to meet him at his son’s house near Barcelona, Spain. I still remember the master showing me his favourite technique, the choke (there is a video in YouTube that I will post here tomorrow). His mind and body were still agile and what really drew my attention was to see him climbing the stairs without using the hands, in a slow but resolute pace. That day I understood that Jiu Jitsu teaches us a lot more than just how to fight. He left us physically, but his example, philosophy and teachings stay.

Rest In Peace Grand Master, may God receive you in his arms.

I World Professional BJJ Cup

January 6, 2009

Finally our sport is becoming professional. Carlos Santos, the head coach of BJJ in Abu Dhabi, under the sponsorship of the sheik Mohamad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, is promoting the first ever World Professional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Cup.

The event will happen in Abu Dhabi, on 1st and 2nd of May, 2009 and will offer a total prize of Us$ 110,000.00 (one hundred and ten thousand american dollars), to be shared by first and second placed competitors of each division.

This competition will surely soon be the most important BJJ tournament in the World, surpassing the other comps held by other federations, those want to keep our sport amateur so only the organisers make money while the athletes earn medals and t-shirts!

The tournament will be open to everyone, but european competitors are encouraged to take place on the European Trials in Spain. Those will be held on 7th and 8th of March, and all the winners will receive free flights and all expenses paid to fight in the main event.

Only holders of european passports will be allowed in the Trials. Other regions of the World will hold Trials too, so if you live outside Europe, please go to their blog and find out where and when the trials will be, in your continent. Only Africa will not have them this year, but in 2010 the city of Johannesburg will hold the African Trials, under the responsability of the Rio Grappling Club.

The participation on the Trials is not mandatory, everyone can go to the main event, but the winners of the Trials will have all expenses paid and will be placed on the second phase of the main event.

On the last 5 years Carlos has successfully organised big tournaments in Abu Dhabi, but this event will be a break through in terms of prizes and structure, and I am confident that this is one opportunity not to be missed by anyone competing in BJJ.

Judson Borges in Poland

January 6, 2009

After the great success of the seminar with Marcos Flexa, we will host another black belt from Carlson Gracie in our gym. Judson will come down straight from the Europeans (he works in the International Federation) to teach one class in Wroclaw and another in Dabrowa Gorniczna.

The seminar in Wroclaw will happen on the Saturday, 7th of February, and Sunday we will go to Dabrowa Gorniczna. Classes will last for 3 hours, and possibly we will have another optional 2 hours explaining the official rules of BJJ according to the IFBJJ. We will soon release more details on prices, times and format of the seminar. Some info on Judson:

Master Judson Borges is a 3rd degree black belt. He received his belt from Carlson Gracie himself, and have competed extensively in the past. He trains since 1974 and won major titles as an athlete and even more as a coach. He worked as director of the Rio de Janeiro BJJ Federation from 97 to 2005. Now he does the same in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Confederation and in the IBJJF. After many years living and teaching in Rio de Janeiro (the craddle of BJJ) he moved with his family to the north-east region of Brasil, where he coaches 3 schools.

Marcos Flexa in Wroclaw

December 23, 2008

Our club will not close during the holidays, with trainings twice a week until New Year’s eve, but we had the festivities to end 2008 last weekend.

Belts were awarded to 9 of our students and we received Marcos Neves Flexa for a two days seminar. Flexa is a 4th degree black belt from Carlson Gracie and teaches in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

P1080929

The seminar was highly praised by our students and visitors, with basic techniques filled with important details, with focus on guard passing Saturday and sweeps and attacks from the guard Sunday.

BJJ practitioners that came from Zielona Gora, Tarnow, Kielce, Gliwice, Dabrowa and Olawa as well as from Wroclaw had the chance to learn great techniques that Marcos learned directly from Carlson Gracie and Marcelo Alonso, among them many attacks and sweeps using De la Riva guard and the modified spider guard used by my master Sergio Souza “Bolao” during the 80′s, when he was considered the best guard in BJJ. Myself learned a modified armbar that will be added to my game soon!

After drilling techniques Sunday, we had our belt ceremony, and moved on to a local pub to celebrate together.

Flexa left Poland happy with the dedication, effort and friendship sown by our polish students. In the plans is to bring together our schools, with Carlson Gracie Amsterdam soon joining the Rio Grappling Club network as an associated club. This will be made official next year, as we plan to invade the Netherlands to compete BJJ and Grappling comps and organise training sessions.

Helio Moreira in Canada

August 19, 2008

Our friend Helio Soneca Moreira has been spotted on the Niagara Falls. Actually he went to Canada to teach BJJ in our associated club in St. Catharines, Ontario. Vince Cristelli sent us the pictures and tell us more about the visit on his report.

Helio ThreeHelio four

“Master Helio Soneca made his first visit north of the border to Canada from his Academy in Louisville Kentucky, to the small city of St. Catharines, Ontario, which is a short ten minute drive from Niagara Falls. The seminar was held at Defensive Arts Training Centre, owned and operated by Sensei Gerry DiSanto, one of Master Atalla’s associated clubs.

Soneca provided a no-gi seminar from the guard on the evening of August 15th, shortly after arriving in town. Matter of fact, he went from the airport directly to the club and began the seminar shortly thereafter! The following day he provided a second three hour seminar on gi training from the half-guard. He also brought along a number of gis and training tapes for those who were interested.

Once the training session was completed, Helio had the opportunity to visit the area making a few stops along the Niagara River that separates Canada and the USA, and taking a few pictures at the brink of the Falls. Although sitting on and hopping over the railing makes for a great picture, it is actually against the law! He also had the opportunity to have a look at the Lock System that the ships use to move through Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. We spent about an hour looking around for one of his favourite dishes at a Korean Restaurant and then a Starbucks beverage. A trip through to a sleepy town called Niagara-On-The-Lake was also on the itinerary for the day. The city lies along the southern shore of Lake Ontario.

It was a joy to have him aboard for the seminar. Watching a slick BJJ practitioner pull submissions out of nowhere and the small little things that make a difference in your game is a wonderful thing to watch! A great teacher and one super individual. It was a pleasure to have met him. I hope our paths cross again in the future.”

Young guns!

August 14, 2008

BJJ has been growing a lot all over the World, and each generation of black belts builds on another level. Two ascending names on the scene, coming from Rio de Janeiro, are Felipe Mota (Gargamel) and Yan Cabral.

They both fight on the middle heavy weight (-88kg) and are constantly battling each other. This fast paced fight happened on the World Championships of the CBJJE in São Paulo and Yan was the winner. Afterwards they fought on the Rio Open by the CBJJ and this time Felipe won. Watch the first one now here!

RGC group in Facebook

July 28, 2008

Facebook has been growing stronger than Myspace and others, due to a better and simpler interface, and a few months ago we decided to join it and start a group to share information, pictures, videos and discuss things important matters to us. Now we are adding videos of techniques, and invite our readers to join it and participate.
One must first join Facebook and add our group.

Wand comments on the World’s BJJ Championships

June 23, 2008

In an interview to the brazilian magazine Tatame, UFC fighter Wanderley Silva openly criticised the organisation of the BJJ World’s Championships. Well known in the martial arts after many years winning the biggest MMA events, Wand expressed his concerns for the future of BJJ.

He said that moving the tournament to California and not paying the athletes damages the sport. In his words: The fighter must leave Brasil, pay for his expenses, it is all hard and if he does not have sponsors, he must pay from his pocket and in the end he does not receive any money prize. The organisers must pay something, I do not understand why they still don’t.

In his opinion that is why most BJJ fighters stop competing in their own art and go to MMA. He also said that the fighters can not fight only for the love of the sport, people must eat, live and pay their bills and unfortunately no one can live from love alone.

Reading his interview, I must add that the organisers moved the competition from Brasil to California just for their own interest in expanding even more their business in America, without regard for the brazilian competitors. From 1500 competitors this year, only 250 were brazilians but all the black belt divisions were won by them, showing that no matter where it the comp is held, brazilians are still far ahead in the game.

It is great to have someone like Wand expressing his opinion, but it is unlikely that the organisers will do anything to change the status quo. They are getting rich at the expense of the competitors and see nothing wrong about that.

We talked about this before, but we must ask again and again until something is done about it. Where is all this money going? One person controls the brazilian, american and international federations at once, there are no elections and no transparency at all, cash flows from sponsors and competitors alike and in the end medals and t-shirts are the only prizes. The federations are run like private businesses, aiming for big profit, but taking all possible advantages and tax breaks that sports organisations enjoy. When is this going to end? Sadly we do not have the answer, but until it happens, we will express our disappointment and from others like Wand that have the guts to come out and speak against this shame.
