RGC invites #7

May 18, 2012

So at last we have the seventh episode of the Rio Grappling Club invites series. This time I gathered BJJ black belts Marcelo Kropotkin and Daniel Lima (RGC Brasil/Bolão JJ), Vinicius Cruz (Carlson Gracie), Rafael Alvarez (De la Riva) and André Motta (Nova União) on the same video, demonstrating to us nice techniques that we can add to our arsenal, provided we drill them a lot. It took us time to transfer the files because I experienced problems with my internet connection but thanks to Max de Michelis who edited my poor filming, our newest episode is on.

If you enjoy, feel welcome to share the post or the video on social media.

BJJ Videos – Ricardo Cavalcanti

May 4, 2012

I mentioned earlier on a post that I would select a few videos from third parties teaching BJJ, always filtering relevant ones among the millions we can find on Youtube.

So lets start with a brazilian master who teaches in Las Vegas, USA. Ricardo Cavaltcanti is a black belt fourth degree under Carlson Gracie Sr. and has a channel where he publishes BJJ techniques to share with everyone. I selected two videos today. In the first he shows double underhook guard passes variations, and in the second he goes int leg drags and a ankle lock variation. Check them out!

RGC Invites #5 and #6

April 17, 2012

Two more videos on our collection.

On RGC invites #5 I introduce my first black belt student, Marco Chuck, and he shows an omoplata sweep. On the same video I show a simple guard pass to prevent my opponent from doing that omoplata or other attacks from that kind of guard, only if you break the grips and act early. The next video, the number six on our series, features my friends Sergio Herdina and Bruno Queroi demonstrating a hook sweep variation and an inverted armbar to add to your game. Hope you enjoy!

South Africa and Namibia

April 17, 2012

Keeping pace with the growth of BJJ and Grappling in Southern Africa, I will travel soon to the Republics of South Africa and Namibia to teach the local Rio Grappling Clubs. The tour includes Johannesburg, Pretoria, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town and Windhoek. My hosts will soon release details on times of the seminars and classes at their gyms and is worth checking our facebook page to find out the times and places I will teach.

If you live in Gauteng Province, make sure to attend the big seminar on 5th of May where my black belts Wiekus Swart and Bobby Karaggianidis will receive their first degree at Wiekus’new gym. Seminar will have 2 hours of No Gi Grappling and one hour BJJ, gradings and open mat. Graduation is only for RGC members put forward by their instructors, but the seminar is open to everyone with at least 3 months of Grappling experience.

I will teach privates and group classes most days from 24th to 28th at the RGC Tap Out (Wiekus Swart), moving to Randpark Ridge (Bobby Karaggianidis’ B & J MMA gym) where I will coach until the 4th of May.

From 6th of May I will split my time between the gyms in Spring and Pretoria where my students Jurgen Putter and Francois Groenenvald give classes. Then I fly to Porth Elizabeth on the 14th of May to teach at Jan-Hendryk Coetsee’s RGC PE for a week, before going to Cape Town where I will be available from the 22nd to 31st of May at Rico Hattingh’s school and at his friends. From 1st of June I will teach Steven Lochner and his group in Windhoek, Namibia for the first time ever. I will then return to Jo’burg to teach Sergio de Freitas and his students before heading back to Brasil.

To book a private or join the group classes, please contact the hosts or email me @ robertoatalla@gmail.com to find out more.

Rio Grappling Club invites #4

March 29, 2012

The fourth video on our series features 4th degree black belts Mauro Chueng and Marcelo Herz demonstrating BJJ positions. Both have received the fourth stripe from our master Sergio Bolão Souza on the same day the video was recorded.

RGC Invites #3

March 22, 2012

Third video on our series Rio Grappling Club invites, featuring Marcelo Kropotkin and Alexandre Garcez.

17.03.2012

March 21, 2012

Saturday was such an intense day that I found no title but the date itself.

Every Saturday the morning training sessions at Academia Corpo 4, in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, has from 8 to 12 BJJ black belts for sparring. This week we also organized a barbecue and gradings only for the inner circle of students of my Master Sergio “Bolão” Souza (6th degree under Carlson Gracie Sr.) afterwards, and the numbers exploded. It was hard to find a spot to roll with over 35 people on the mats, with more than half being black belts. We had 2 blue belts from the Emirates Jiu Jitsu Center in Dubai visiting Rio that joined us, as well as black belts from master De La Riva and Infight JJ.

P1060702

Master Sergio came around 11 am and greeted us all before talking to the group and letting me and Mauro Chueng speak to them too. Master thanked Marcelo Kropotkin for his loyalty and dedication the group and appreciated his efforts, also complimenting Mauro and I for the development of the Rio Grappling Club, telling us all that he fully supports a joint-venture between his students as long as we preserve the name Bolão Jiu Jitsu, a brand 20 years old, very respected as a competition team in Rio de Janeiro since he left Carlson Gracie and started his group. Later on we spoke and we will start together in all comps from now on, with details to follow soon.

P1060686

We will merge efforts between the international team leaded by me and Mauro with our fellow friends from Rio that have been training and competing alongside us for 15 years or more. In reality we were always part of the same group, but we need to sort out details in order to increase sinergy and collaboration between the Rio Grappling Club and Bolão Jiu Jitsu, leading to a joint-venture that will add so much to our groups. None of the brands will cease to exist and a new brand will not be born, this collaboration will actually promote the RGC and Bolão Jiu Jitsu together.

Moving on to the gradings: Master Sergio awarded the fourth degree to Mauro Chueng, Marcelo Kropotkin, Marcelo Herz, Roberto Atalla (me) and Bruno Ximenes. Some of our friends received one and two degrees but I must confirm exactly who was given with my friends so I don’t post wrong info on a hurry.

P1060700

The barbecue started after a long picture session and completed a memorable day with friends having fun, overeating and enjoying the bond that keeps us together. A great surprise was the late visit of our friend Aron Roichmann who came with his two young daughters to say hello, after many years off the mat. We hope he comes back soon, next time with a Gi and his rusty black belt ;)

Instructional videos

March 21, 2012

BJJ has experienced a boom in recent years all over the World and many times I hear from grapplers that came from Judo or Wrestling background moving to BJJ and No Gi Grappling. Many of them do so because they desire to fight in the UFC and other MMA shows, while others are pure grapplers, and many suffer from lack of access to a good coach or live too far from good schools to learn directly from more experienced grapplers.

Very often they rely on YouTube videos to learn positions, which can be a good thing if they know who to learn from. Unfortunately for many beginners is hard to tell a good position from a bad one, with so many people posting crap everyday. A few good coaches actually release a position once a month or once a week, with some others doing it less often, and I will keep an eye on them so I can help my students to separate the good from the not so good and the bad, a difficult task for people without a solid knowledge.

So I decided to watch a few YouTube videos every week and select useful ones to share with the page and group we have on the Facebook. Some of the best ones will be shared in our blog too.

Not enough? I agree and I realized that we need to put out some instructional videos ourselves. The first concept involving instructional videos is the Rio Grappling Club invites. In this project I will simply gather friends of mine, black belts from my team or not, and film them showing techniques. I will not ask specific positions, rather leaving them free to decide what to show, with me translating the steps to English when necessary. Many experienced black belts that live in Brasil and train for many years but do not compete anymore and are not known outside Rio are collaborating and in time we will have a lot of videos coming out regularly. With the collaboration of Max de Michelis, a purple belt from RGC in Italy that edits the videos, the thing took off already and we already have two videos that you can watch below.

I cannot promise much quality on the images and sound, as I am new to film and translate at the same time and the gear is not top quality, so expect amateur videos until we get hands-on experience doing this. Also please do not request particular moves or coaches at this time. Also notice that videos will never replace the need for a good coach and a good group to train in. If you have a chance to train in a top school daily, regularly or even once, go for it!

Back from the European BJJ Championships 2012

February 4, 2012

RGC was well represented in Lisbon this January with athletes from Italy and Croatia. As a team we won the First Place in the Juveniles (under 18 years old) division, thanks to the awesome students we have in Dakovo, Croatia.

Leaded by Zeljko Vukovic (RGC Croatia Head Coach), our youngsters improved their second place in 2011 when we had 2 competitors, and raised the biggest trophy this time, leaving Renzo Gracie Israel and Gracie Barra behind us.

Also a good performance from our Italian girls that scored three medals in the competition. We must work harder and bring a bigger team in 2013 to have better chances in other divisions, but our small group is up to the challenge. Nobody said it would be easy to get there, but we will keep trying and aiming higher each and every year.

Rio Grappling Club arrives in Athens

January 22, 2012

Our group is expanding due to the hard work we put on, and now the Rio Grappling Club receives a new affiliated school in Athens, Greece.

The cradle of western civilization, where democracy and philosophy were born, has now a school under the RGC, coached by Hermes Dimitropoulos, an experienced grappler and black belt in Judo with many good results in Grappling, Judo and BJJ comps in Greece and Europe. We welcome him and his students and hope that in the future that will bring synergy with the groups we have in Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro.

Soon they will adopt our name and logo. In the cards is a visit from me or Mariusz Koziej to Greece to have a chance to know better our students and show them our way of training bjj.

Other countries may receive RGC schools in 2012, and more clubs adopting our method and philosophy, but will not say much until all is confirmed.

On a side note, our only instructor in France (Basque Country), Joao Batista “Pastel” dos Santos, moved back to London where he will teach Capoeira and BJJ. Mestre Pastel helped me to establish in London back in 2003 and trained with me since then, proving his loyalty even when training in many different places while I wasn’t available. I wish him best luck on his relocation and am looking forward to see him again after the European summer.

RGC Namibia

December 12, 2011

The Rio Grappling Club arrived in South Africa in 2007, initially with clubs in Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth.

Now we have bjj and grappling clubs in Cape Town (Rico Hattingh) and Klerksdorp (Tiaan Swart) as well as in PE (Jan-Hendrik Coetsee) and in 5 different locations in Gauteng Province (Tapout Northcliff – Wiekus Swart; Randpark Ridge – Bobby Karaggianidis; Springs and Pretoria – Jurgen Putter and Francois Groenenwald; Bedfordview – Sergio Freitas). Our students are among the best in bjj and grappling in the country, proven time and again in national and regional comps.

We are proud to announce that our network has expanded into the beautiful country of Namibia, under the responsibility of Steven Lochner. Steven has a huge task ahead of him, developing the sport in Windhoek and the rest of the country, but we are confident that with the help of Rico Hattingh and the other RGC instructors in South Africa, he will not be alone in this mission. We welcome him and his students in our organization and are looking forward to see BJJ and Grappling grow popular in Namibia.

RGC expansion in Italy

September 6, 2011

The Rio Grappling Club welcomes the new affiliated schools in the Tuscan region, Italy. Now you can also train with us in Viareggio and Pistoia. RGC Viareggio is captained by Alberto Remedi under supervision of Bernardo Serrini (RGC Livorno and Italian Head Coach), while RGC Pistoia is leaded by Alberto Tesi, under the eyes of Matteo Calamandrei (RGC Firenze).

We also congratulate the coaches Bernardo Serrini, Matteo Calamandrei, Gianluca Boni and Matteo Menna that were granted black belts in Grappling by the Italian federation FIGMA, responsible for all Grappling tournaments in Italy.

Can you triangle yourself?

September 5, 2011

I know the answer already, for most of us this would be an impossible task. But last week in Amsterdam while visiting my friend Marcos Flexa at his gym, I came across this ultra flexible guy who triangled himself. And I thought I have seen it all when it comes to BJJ! Check this short video I made from him, but do not try this at home!

Back from the Summer Camp!

September 4, 2011

In the hottest month in Europe, most people are just chilling out and enjoying the weather, but for us grapplers the idea is to chill out, enjoy the weather and also train! That is why on each year we get more people joining our BJJ/Grappling Camp. From 12 people in 2009 to 32 on our third edition, the group is growing steadily and the fact that most participants returned shows that we are going in the right path.

Camp started on Saturday, 13th of August and we ran technical, drills and sparring sessions for 8 days, consuming lots of Italian food to keep our engines running. The atmosphere in the Due Laghi Hotel is perfect as the place is near beaches and cities but isolated enough to keep us focused on training and getting to know better our group. Having the meals together is great too as we feel as an extended family. The weeklong is great as we develop our games, measure against each other in a relaxed environment and become more integrated into the Rio Grappling Club. So it is about the training but not only that, is also about forging friendships. Hard to explain in words but feel invited to come and join us next year to experience a week not to be forgotten.

The training schedule has improved and now we have 3 classes on most days. The morning session is about specific and general sparring, the afternoon class focus on drills and at night we rehearse techniques. This year the focus was on guard, and we expect to see the progress in our students and their students (the fact that many RGC instructors take part helps to spread the knowledge beyond them).

We had participants from Italy (RGC Livorno, RGC Firenze, RGC Sestri Levante, RGC Bologna, RGC Ferrara, RGC Cesena, RGC Molfetta and the Brothers Leteri from Verona), Poland (RGC Wroclaw and Copacabana), Serbia (our newest member, Nenad Latincic, now responsible for the RGC in Belgrade), Czech Republic, Spain, Sweden and Brasil.

On the last day we had the belt ceremony, promoting Matteo Menna to the brown belt, Matteo Tugnoli, Valerio Mori Ubaldini and Fabio Battelli to the purple, Sara Giachetti to blue belt and giving Mariusz Koziej his first stripe on the black belt as well as a few stripes to many participants who had to go through the belt whipping.

Special thanks to all RGC instructors and students, our guests, and to Mariusz Koziej who did a brilliant job taking the drills to another level. I feel that our mission was well accomplished and we are planning the next one, possibly in the same place and probably extending it to 10 days. Many participants already posted their photos on Facebook, but I will select a few to publish on our blog this week. Stay tuned!
